For the Japanese vs. Chinese question, the practical person in me wants to say Chinese because China has such a big economy now and it's probably going to be useful and so on. I'm guessing you know some, considering you've taken a class and have a Chinese background, which'll probably help a lot.
Have you studied any Japanese? From what I've seen, it's kinda completely different outside of the fact they both use Chinese characters... @_@ Then again, you might have a big head start if you know a lot of characters already?
I guess the big thing is what do you plan to do with your language? The NUMBER ONE factor for your progress will be whether you can keep motivated in your studies... so what's your motivation? Understanding silly dramas and kids shows is probably a dumb reason, but it keeps me motivated in my language study... :P
